  After doing some research it looks like in California elders aren't required by law to report child abuse that they learn of. These exemptions to the reporting of child abuse need to be repealed. I wonder what the process is to get initiatives on the voting ballot. If given the option I strongly believe that a majority of voters would repeal these exemptions.

  Cal. Penal Code § 11166(c)(1)-(2) (West, WESTLAW through Ch. 10 of 2003-2004 Reg. Sess. & 1st Ex. Sess.)

  A clergy member who acquires knowledge or reasonable suspicion of child abuse during a penitential
  communication is not subject to the requirement to make a report. For the purposes of this subdivision,
  ‘penitential communication' means a communication, intended to be in confidence, including, but not limited to,
  a sacramental confession, made to a clergy member who, in the course of the discipline or practice of his or her
  church, denomination, or organization, is authorized or accustomed to hear those communications, and under the
  discipline, tenets, customs, or practices of his or her church, denomination, or organization, has a duty to keep those
  communications secret.
  Nothing in this subdivision shall be construed to modify or limit a clergy member's duty to report known or
  suspected child abuse when a clergy member is acting in some other capacity that would otherwise make the clergy
  member a mandated reporter.

  Many news sources are leaving out the fact that the principal is likely motivated by religous beliefs. Most people will misinterpret the story and get the impression that it's actually about the "atheist agenda".

  i've never been a jw, my spouse was born in and disfellowshipped as a young adult.

  First a little background. I've never been a JW, my spouse was born in and disfellowshipped as a young adult. When I saw the subsequent treatment from family I was disgusted. It made me want to find out every thing I could about the Watchtower Cult. JW's from my spouse's side of the family will still talk to me because I've never openly criticized their "religion". I'm a fairly optimistic person so I've always held out hope that some of them will wake up. There is hope for some of the younger generation, people aren't as gullible as they used to be.

  My spouse wasn't home when the Elders dropped by. I know they were simply being good Watchtower drones and following Corporate procedure by doing their annual checkup on disfellowshipped ones. What is the real purpose of the annual visit? Keep in mind that my spouse has been out for several years and this is the Elder's first visit, although I've heard that's fairly common.

  It's truly a sick system the Watchtower has created. Kick anyone out who won't blindly follow the leaders of the Cult, then cut off contact with the person's "friends" and family. Then send out Watchtower drones to attempt to assimilate the person back in. I imagine this technique is not very successful at pulling people back in, but does probably work occasionally.

  Anyone hear actually gotten an annual Elder's visit? How did it go?

  While there might be some similarities, I don't think it's very accurate to think of them as being fascist. Fascism usually involves a highly militaristic society. The common fascist desire for racial purity also doesn't apply to JW's.

  JW culture would be better defined as a totalitarian theocracy with the Governing Body ruling the people under the pretense of divine backing.

  i'd like to find out if he was lying to me or not.

  Thanks for the responses, looks like there's conflicting info on it's availability. Hopefully more people will chime in.

  How do special orders work, are there books not kept on the stock list that can be requested? Why keep them secret?

  The "forbidden zone" reminds me of Planet of the Apes. Not sure about the apostate part of your quote.

  I was recently talking to a JW relative and he claimed it was out of print and not available for ordering. I'd like to find out if he was lying to me or not. Would anyone still attending meetings be willing to attempt to order one? I know I can download it online from "apostate" websites, but need to confirm if active JW's have access to the KIT.

  Funeral etiquette - Is crying allowed or seen as a lack of faith?

  i have been to a few funerals and recalled that at many the cloest family members did not cry.. .

  ok cultures and a number of factors may explain that, but could crying mean you don't believe in the resurrection?.

  is it social compliance?.

  I've been to a few JW funerals that my non-JW relatives attended as well. The non-JW's all commented later about the lack of emotion displayed from the deceased's family. I later brought this up and heard almost the same answer from all the dubs "Well we believe in the resurrection". But the catch is that almost all the non-JW's are Christians and also believe in an afterlife in which we get to see our relatives as well.

  The behavior of JW's at funerals is a conditioned response. The fact that the majority of the funeral talk is a Watchtower infomercial for the potential recruits in the audience may also have something to do with the lack of emotion.
